My name is Mary Munyutu, and I have recently taken on the role of part-time Faith Outreach Coordinator at Worker Justice Wisconsin. In this capacity, my work focuses on enhancing our engagement with faith communities to support worker rights and advocacy.
I am responsible for connecting with various faith communities to involve them in our “Labor in the Pulpits/On the Bimah/In the Minbar” program each September. This initiative integrates worker justice themes into religious services, fostering broader support for our mission. Maintaining consistent communication through email, phone calls, and in-person meetings helps build and sustain relationships with faith leaders and congregations, ensuring effective collaboration.
I coordinate with congregations for WJW workshops, facilitate the use of WJW’s faith study guide, and organize other events within these communities. This includes planning and executing educational and advocacy activities that align with our goals. Additionally, I make connections with faith-based organizations, such as the Wisconsin Council of Churches and Wisconsin Faith Voices for Justice, and participate in interfaith meetings like those organized by the Multi-Faith Coalition of South-Central WI.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is observing how faith communities unite around social justice issues. Meeting leaders from diverse faith backgrounds has been enlightening, revealing how religious principles align with labor rights and how faith can be a powerful tool in mobilizing support for workers.
Additionally, I have gained valuable skills in communication and community organizing, particularly in framing labor rights in ways that resonate with faith-based audiences. Navigating various religious traditions has strengthened my ability to collaborate across diverse groups.
I am excited about upcoming projects, including organizing a workshop with faith leaders to deepen their involvement in worker advocacy. I look forward to further building these connections and continuing to bridge faith and justice to empower workers.
My experience at WJW has been both inspiring and educational, and I am committed to advancing the organization’s mission through impactful faith outreach.
