Wage Theft
ICWJ is stepping up efforts to fight wage theft locally. We are working with the Dane County District Attorney’s Office and other labor advocacy groups to advocate for the prosecuting of wage theft offenders. In the past, the county has had a weak record of prosecuting wage theft.
2010 National Day of Action Against Wage Theft
In the press:
ICWJ participated in the second annual National Day of Action Against Wage Theft on Thursday, November 18, as planned by the national organization Interfaith Worker Justice. Advocacy organizations across the country organized events to highlight the effects of wage theft on workers, and to highlight how communities are fighting back.
ICWJ and the Workers’ Rights Center organized a rally that took place outside the Dane County Courthouse.
A group of 25-30 faith leaders, community activists and workers gathered outside the Dane County Courthouse to expose the crime of wage theft and call for further prosecution of employers who steal wages from their workers. The rally began with words from the new District Attorney, Ismael Ozanne. He told the crowd that he was committed to work with the Department of Workforce Development and community agencies to increase prosecution of wage theft and seek to pursue these cases criminally.
We are excited to have received support from the DA and to have gotten the word out about the crime of wage theft.
Another meeting with the DA’s office is scheduled for December. The ICWJ looks forward to continuing this work with the DA’s office.
